How to build a website

John Web Blog

First of all, one thing to note on how to build a website is:

  • A domain name ( purchased by a domain registrar )
  • hosting account ( purchased and rented by a hosting service )

See our website FAQ for more information on domains and hosting accounts.

There are many options for creating a website…obviously employing a web designer like myself or media company is always a good choice.

But, maybe its something you want to learn about. Maybe, you realize that learning web design can actually benefit your business life and may have a direct impact on the way you do business. It can also be a great hobby.

Website builders

There are of some great website builders out there for you to try. The most popular to name a few are wix & weebly.

These types software are created to make it very easy for a non tech person to create a website in a matter of hours.

There is a cost to this convenience with a monthly charge, but I think it can be a great place to start if you haven’t got the time to invest a learning about web design. Maybe you want a hobby blog or want to sell a few products online. Everything is pretty much taken care of when you use these types of systems.

There is downloadable software like Artisteer that is a drag and drop page builder. Artisteer is something similar to the above but is a downloaded program. It creates the website and gives you the files to use on your hosting server.

Open-source content management systems

These systems are free to use for personal and commercial use. WordPress, Joomla & Drupal are the most popular.

They do have a learning curve, but, if you do spend the time and learn about any of these systems then the sky is the limit.

These systems can be used in other ways for example using them as an intranet for your company.

Creating a unique look for your site is used by adding a template to your cms. These are widely available.

These templates can also have great options that allow very high customization of your future site.

Third party content management systems

Going to a design house or web designer for a professional website is a safer bet than taking it into your own hands. They may offer their own custom content management systems. The usually can design it around your needs and make it very easy for you to update your site content at your leisure.
